Ten Little Kiwi Birds is a classically Kiwi re-imagination of a popular children’s nursery rhyme and playtime song. For the first time ever an award winning children’s music group and an award winning children’s author have teamed up to create a fun piece of music for kids to sing and dance to. Tui award winners Itty Bitty Beats and author Peter Millett met each other in Suzy Cato’s Kiwi Kids Music community and agreed to join forces on a kid’s entertainment project. The result of their collaboration was song inspired by Millett’s Ten Little Kiwi Birds rhyme that featured in his children’s book Classic Rhymes For Kiwi Kids.

Three versions of Ten Little Kiwi Birds were created: an English version, Te Reo version and a bilingual version. Itty Bitty Beats wanted to ensure the song could be enjoyed by every whanau, kura and preschool in New Zealand.

An innovative video has also been created to accompany either version of the song. The video featuring ten playful digital kiwi birds may be one of the first ever 3D kiwi-ised nursery rhymes to be released in Aotearoa.

Author Peter Millett has published a number of rhyming picture books including Moa’s Ark and Humpty Rugby, and his 2014 title The Anzac Puppy won the Children’s Choice Picture Book of the Year award. Millett has collaborated with Australian based entertainer Jay Laga’aia on musical picture books: The Kiwi Go Marching One By One and the forthcoming release My Old Man He Plays Rugby.
